The Cheapest Place to See the Northern Lights, on Tour Prices

On the price of the tour, the cheapest place to see the northern lights is Kiruna, in Swedish Lapland: Kiruna Buss’s aurora tour starts at US$32 as of October 2026, with professional digital photos of you, and Kiruna is the gateway to Abisko, the clearest Scandinavian sky on our measure. Rovaniemi’s guarantee tours, which refund you if the camera captures no aurora, start at about twice that. Flights and hotels decide most of a trip’s cost, and this page does not quote them: they change by the day.

The cheapest tour in each destination

Lowest from prices among the tours compared on this site, as listed on GetYourGuide in October 2026; prices move with the date you pick.

Cheapest is not always best value

A cheap tour that sees nothing is the most expensive night of the trip. Two policies change the sum: a free retry, as on Northern Lights Bus’s Reykjavik bus and Soleil de Minuit’s Reykjavik tour, and a refund if the camera captures no aurora, as on Lapland Explorers’ Rovaniemi hunt and Polar Lapland’s guarantee tour. In Tromsø, Northern Lights Safari sells an Unlimited option instead.

Can you see them for free?

Yes. On a clear active night the aurora shows from the edge of Kiruna, Abisko, Tromsø or Yellowknife, and the forecasts are free. What the cheap tours add is the transport out of town to the clearest sky of the night, a guide who reads the forecast, hot drinks, and on Kiruna Buss’s tour professional photos of you, for little more than a taxi.
