Night cloud: NASA POWER climatology (CLOUD_AMT_NIGHT), January 2001 to December 2025, at the Tromsø grid cell. Darkness: computed with JPL DE421 via Skyfield (sun more than 12° below the horizon), averaged per night. Kp 3+: share of the 3-hour Kp windows from 2015-01-01 to 2025-12-31 that fell in the dark hours here, from GFZ’s Kp index (CC BY 4.0); September and March run higher, the equinox effect NOAA describes. Clear dark hours are an estimate, dark hours times the cloud-free share. Checked October 2026.

The Norway Northern Lights Guide

Tromsø, Alta or Lofoten

Three bases under the oval, compared on the data and the tours.

For the northern lights in Norway, fly north: Tromsø, Alta and the Lofoten islands all sit under the auroral oval, and between them they have nearly 200 northern lights tours on GetYourGuide (October 2026). Tromsø has by far the most; Alta, inland at the head of a fjord, has a little more clear sky on our measure; Lofoten has the mountains and beaches that make the photographs. The best value for a first try is Northern Lights Safari Tromsø, from US$70 as of October 2026, with an Unlimited option that lets you rejoin until you see the lights during your stay.

When to go in Norway

The season runs from September to March at Tromsø, the months with at least four hours of darkness. On our measure, dark hours that are also cloud-free on average, the best months are November, December and January. The weeks around the equinoxes are more active: in 2015 to 2025, 30% of Tromsø’s dark hours in September and 28% in March had a Kp index of 3 or more, against 18% in January. Can you see the northern lights from Oslo?

Rarely. Oslo sits at about 56.9° geomagnetic latitude on our estimate, so the oval has to reach far south, around Kp 5 on NOAA’s rule of thumb, and it does so only on a handful of nights a year. No northern lights tour on GetYourGuide leaves from Oslo (October 2026); the tours start in the north. From Oslo, fly to Tromsø, Alta or Evenes for Lofoten.

Is a tour worth it in Norway?

The aurora is free, and on a clear night you can see it from all three towns. What the Norwegian tours sell is the drive: the coast is cloudy, typical night cloud at Tromsø is 83% in January, and guides who watch the live cloud data will drive far into the fjords or over the border to the gap in it. Add a warm camp, a photo of you under the lights and, on the Northern Lights Safari, the Unlimited option, and the tour is what turns a cloudy week into a sighting.

What Recent Guests Say

4.6/5 from 8784 verified reviews

"Obviously, we managed to see the aurora, which is not a given, but also the guides' tips and the photos! A wonderful experience."

Paola Italy

"Amazing experience, even on the rainy day we say amazing lights"

Akshat India

"Despite the initially very cloudy skies in Tromsø, the excursion was a resounding success thanks to our fantastic guides, Carolin and Claudia. We drove all the way to Skibotn to a lake, where we were finally able to see the Northern Lights. The two guides were super nice, shared lots of interesting information, and took beautiful photos. Thank you for this great evening!"

Michael Germany

"⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great Northern Lights Tour! We had a wonderful experience and were pleasantly surprised to see the Northern Lights after just two hours on the bus! A big thank you to David for being so helpful and taking beautiful photos of us, and to Naemi and Alberto for their kindness, support, and great teamwork throughout the tour. The whole team was friendly, professional, and well-organised. We really appreciated their efforts and would definitely recommend this tour to anyone visiting Tromsø! Thank you, David, Naemi, and Alberto for a great experience!"

Duc Bach Khoa Germany

"The excursion lasted about five hours in total. The Italian guide Sofia was very good at providing us with explanations and describing the phenomenon in great detail, including from a scientific perspective!! All we had to do was get off the bus about an hour and a half from Tromsø and we found the Northern Lights. The sky was very clear, and both Sofia and Koren kept a close eye on the satellites to make sure we saw it. The bus was very comfortable and clean, and the driver was also very good."

Silvia Italy

"Really nice tour guides! Everything was very well organized. We managed to see the beautiful aurora. Thank you :)"

KAROLINA Poland

"A very nice experience, even though the weather wasn't the best – rain, snow – we managed to see the northern lights, even making it as far as Finland! The photos that were taken of us are beautiful."

Greta Italy

"The experience was amazing Even though it started with low chance of seeing the northern lights, the sky cleared up and the guides decided we would stay close to Norway and not go to the borders to wait for the lights and it was the best decision The lights were amazing we didn’t travel very far and we had more time to enjoy them by the coast Our guides Caroline and Claudia were amazing and very helpful, they took our photos and offered hot drinks with cookies by the fire"
